Clown's Playhouse: Postwar African-American Leisure Beyond Indiana Avenue
For much of the 20th-century, segregation shaped the social landscape of Black leisure, which, in Indianapolis, was largely centered along Indiana Avenue. In a less well-known African-American neighborhood in southwest Indianapolis, Clown’s Playhouse served as a location for African-American residents to host countless live bands, holiday parties, and social events, which were barred from white-only businesses elsewhere in the city.
