To Exist Outside the Box: Marginal Illustrations in The Hours of Catherine of Cleves

In The Hours of Catherine of Cleves, there are several marginal illustrations that are open to fresh interpretation because their lack of clear connection and importance to the main illustrations and prayers makes them easy to ignore or underappreciate. I will analyze many of these marginal illustrations to determine how they might relate to their particular page, applying methodology which is present in Michael Camille’s books, Image on the Edge: The Margins of Medieval Art, and Gothic Art: Glorious Visions. Doing so will reveal new insights into many of the manuscript's odd and seemingly unrelated marginal illustrations, while, along the way, identifying the wider stylistic trends present.
