Racial/Ethnic Disparities and its effects on prosecutional decision making.

Prosecution is arguably the most important role in the criminal justice system. They decide whether you are admitted into the system or if you walk away free. With so much discretion at their hands, it has allowed for opinionated decisions to be made where only laws should be applied. I am researching racial and ethnic disparities and its effects on prosecutorial decision making. The most critical role of a prosecutor in which these disparities take place is the charging process. This poster will present systematic literature review on racial disparities in charging.  The literature review demonstrated mixed results. I draw conclusions on the reasons behind these seemingly racially motivated decisions.  I plan to continue my research with the Monroe County prosecutor’s office.
