The Indiana University School of Medicine’s Hoosier Public Health Corps (AmeriCorps Program)'s Impact on Medical Students' Understanding of Cultural Humility and Addressing Social Determinants of Health through a Social Justice Lens

The IU School of Medicine’s Hoosier Public Health Corps (HPHC) AmeriCorps program demonstrates critical outcomes from the impacts of critical service learning and educational seminars on medical students' understanding of how to address microaggressions, bystander intervention, and social determinants of health through a trauma-informed care and socially-just lens. This program partners medical students with nonprofit organizations such as Crooked Creek Food Pantry, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Indiana Youth Group, across six campuses to help communities with capacity building and direct service. Students demonstrate increased understanding of how socioeconomic status, ability, race, citizenship status, and other factors influence access to quality healthcare and confidence in their abilities to serve historically underrepresented patients.
